Literally, Rajasthan translates into "king's land" and it is an appropriate name for the state. Each of the cities we've travelled to here have huge palaces overlooking them. The people dress elegantly with bright turbans and saris, golden earrings, and camel-skin shoes. Even most of our cheap hotels have had big rooms with royal red curtains (in Bikaner) or are decorated with Rajasthani art (Sunrise Hotel in Jodhpur). Some of my favorite memories from the last few days (post camel ride and rat temple): Sleeping on the rooftops of our hotels in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur with a cool breeze all night and huge stone palaces in view (the size of football fields and towering over the cities); flying a paper kite from the rooftop and watching kites battle over the city; being woken up on the roof by huge black-faced monkeys jumping over us and showing their sharp white fangs; and drinking a safron lassi in the bustling Jodhpur market.
