Yesterday evening we found a laundry,we have both exhausted our clothes supply completely (the only things clean are long pants and warm tops - both unworn so far),so we handed over the lot expecting a shock bill - only 4
Then we went for supper,a monster Argie steak with drinks incl tip was 9 for 2 people, beginning to like Argentina and its 1 litre bottles of beer
We have decided the hostel, which is more like a motel, is a bit seedy, but we will last 2 nights
Oh yeah, been meaning to talk about the buses here, everywhere incl Brazil, its not like London where you pay the bus driver and walk on - here you walk past the bus driver to a turnstyle where the ticket dude sits, you pay him, then he lets you through the turnstyle, the ticket dude also studies the back doors when they open and makes sure no-one gets on, would love to see the unruly buggers who cause so much trouble in UK try to get away with it here
OK,last general point for the day,we struggled with a simple first question when we got here "where you from?" cos we are south africans born and bred, but we live in London and travel always from London, well feedback from everyone we have met so far is that the answer to that question is definitely South Africa, the London bit can come later, it seems to me there are very few saffa travellers out there, and the rest of the world quite enjoys coming across a few every now and then
TODAY was Iguazu Falls again but from the Argentine side, we hopped on the bus at the main bus station 100m from the hostel, paid 7 pesos each return (the peso is about 6 to 1 on pound, 3 to 1 on dollar), it is extremely hot today, the sun is savage
Entry is 30 pesos, we hop on the train (tren de la salva) from the visitor centre and go to the first stop (estacion cataratas) where we will disembark and do two walks, the superior circuito and the inferior circuito
The superior is 35 min long and is a series of walkways built along the top of the waterfalls, the waterfalls are literally metres away from where you walk and from the viewing points, you are so close, unlike from the brazilian side which offers more panoramic views from a distance
I can see why you need to do both
Next the inferior, a lower walk, also along a set of catwalks but with steep descents, that gets you to the base of san martin waterfall, the walk is about 1hr 15min and has some spectacular views of the falls
Back to the train for the 20 min trip to the last stop, estacion del diablo, where you have a 1km walk along catwalks crossing the Rio Iguazu river to a spectacular viewpoint of the garanta del diablo, the devils throat, incredible, you get soaked, the viewpoint hovers on the edge, the volume of water is astonishing
We skipped the train back and opted instead for a 20 peso boat trip back along the river, very quite, only 10 people, see some nature, and got lucky with two wild toucans with spectacular bright beaks, making a great noise
The argentina side is a full day affair, and is up close and personal, but I still say they are correct to advise you to see both sides, what an excursion this has been
Going to go find our laundry now...tomorrow we have a bus at 2pm, another 18 hr trip
A quick note on the falls, we would skip Foz de Iguazu if we had to do it again,Puerto Iguazu is much nicer with more to do,and Brazil side is an easy day trip (with time to spare)
Supper was so good I have to blog the place,in my 2007 footprint it isn't listed as an option under eating, its called "Il Fratello" and the address is Av Cordoba 135,it says pasta and pizza, but it also has one of the best steaks I have eaten in years, sitting in the open air section, at 9pm, in boards, slops and a shirt, its hot but there is a cool breeze, the steak is so good you almost cry out in joy,you have been there for a few hours, couple beers, couple empanadas, couple steaks, good tip, and you still only pay 12 for 2 people, then it hits you, you are in Argentina, in a remote continent few people ever go to, life is so good its grand, please try the steak, its a beaut
