This was an exciting day for both Ed and I, as we went to the Madeira Divepoint and booked ourselves into a day of diving. Ed is an avid diver and was keen to get kitted up and submerge himself in that other world, but I had never scuba-dived before (despite fantastic snorkels in the Galapagos Islands and the warm Caribbean waters of Belize) so tentatively started in the pool, whilst he reacquainted himself with his fish friends around the headland.
Needless to say, despite initial nerves and being thoroughly disconcerted by being able to breathe at the bottom of a swimming pool, I took to it like a fish to water and saw a star fish and rescued a lost snorkel whilst negotiating the rocky floor of the bay. Ed joined me later and we reunited underwater - our romance taken, literally, to a new level (haha, yuk!). See Ed's photos for his underwater japes :)
Returning home cold and exhausted (and for me, far more freckly than hours before), we warmed up and took a sunset stroll around the town of Funchal, our first proper rekki of the island's capital city. It's grandeur was typical of Portuguese architecture, culture and history. Its streets and public garden were immaculately kept, and our walk culminated at a colourful (red and yellow!) old fort, from where we watched the orange sunset, before driving home and, once again, collapsing into bed.
