We decided to take a road trip, as Ed had be honoured the trust of my mum to be put on her car insurance!  With wheels at our disposal, we wanted to get out of the city and explore England for a change; despite the fact England is my homeland, I have never properly explored it, save trips when I was young to visit great-aunts, and Ed, ever the traveller, wanted to see this green and pleasant land England is famed for.

After work on Friday, Gemma, Ed, Adam and myself congregated in North London and headed north to Ampleforth, a quaint village in North Yorkshire which houses the distinguished and austere monastery of Ampleforth College, "the Catholic Eton", which Adam had attended.  We arrived late at night and were fortunate to have been housed by the monastery, the boys in the monastery accommodation itself - known as "horse boxes" -and Gemma and myself with a kind member of the parish as females are not allowed to share accommodation with the monks.

We arose the following morning shortly after 5.30am, and crept through the quiet village to the monastery to attend īMatinsī, one of the six daily prayers enacted by the monks.  It was my first sighting of the robed men, who walked solemnly though the chapelīs crypt, bowing before the altar and lowly chanting Latin dirgies.  The service was sombre and the four of us, mumbling the hymns, constituted a large part of the small, shy audience. After breakfast (the boys with the monks, us girls back in the village), we took the car to explore the grand, immaculately kept grounds.  See the photos of the lake for what we found. :)

After frolicking by the lake, it was time to head towards our final destination, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne - see the next entry, where the frolicking escalates!
