Vietnam War Remnants Museum
Entry 267 of 270 | show all | print this entry |
Essentially today is our last day on tour. We do a provisional pack, including weight check, before heading to the Post Office to off-load any unnecessary items. Two moped drivers race each other as they take us through the streets to the PO, some very close encounters!
The remainder of today is spent visiting the Vietnam War Museum. What an emotional rollercoaster. The exhibits speak for themselves, its very much a distressing compendium of the horrors of modern warfare. Ad leaves the museum unable to stomach some of the graphic exhibitions (in one instance two children's heads were preserved in a glass box, another exhibit are the remains of persons who died from the deadly Agent Orange, while there are grisly portfolio's of photographs of mutilation, napalm burns and torture). So much more including the horrendous stories of torture (such as putting snakes and rats onto women, burning persons body parts, so much more). One gallery details the effects of the 75 million litres of defoliant sprays dumped across the country, including hideously malformed foetuses preserved in pickling jars. Plus, some of the perpetrators of these horrors are on display in the courtyard outside, including a 28 tonne howitzer, a ghoulish collection of bomb parts and a renovated Douglass Sky raider plane. Another gallery is titled Requiem , which presents war photographs from the countless journalists who lost their lives working amide the French and American wars. The museum rounds up with a grisly mock-up of the tiger cages - prison cells.
Afterwards, the mood is somewhat sombre. We enjoy an outdoor lunch before taking a stroll through Saigons answer to Brown Thomas. Wow these prices would be outrageous even in Dublin!!! We have some banter with the sales women selling handbags before we leave the store. Its only then that Ad notices we've no bags!! Very unusual...... yes very unusual! In fact its wrong. Fergus then acknowledges he's left his back-pack in the 4th floor toilets. We re-enter the building and are about to take the escalator when a security guard approaches us! We had left our passports in the bag and it had been handed in! The sales staff had recognised us from chatting to them earlier, in fact we soon realise many of the downstairs staff were watching out for us and very well aware of our situation! Lucky escape.
The remainder of the evening is spent collecting a couple of last bits and pieces before Ad has her final fitting. All shopped out, we retire for the evening.
