We leave "Fergus" town this morning in the direction of the Elora gorge. The Elora Gorge is one of the most beautiful and spectacular natural area's in the Grand River valley. The Grand river rushes through 22-metre high cliff walls. There are plenty of outdoor activities, kayaking and tubing (much faster than the river we tried in Texas). We take a wee walk around the gorge before driving to Oakville just South of Toronto where we meet up with Kathie and Mike.
Our destination is Niagara on the lake, which was once the capital of Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a quaint township, full of unique visitor experiences and stunning scenery. Set by the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, it was home to a strong military presence and a busy port. Fort George National Historic Site was the military stand post of the British, and has been completely reconstructed. During the War of 1812, Niagara-on-the-Lake came under fierce bombardment and was the scene of bloody battles
Kathie has prepared us a picnic which we enjoy in a park along the Niagara river in Niagara On The Lake. It's a faboulous afternoon and we take it easy along the shore before stopping off at a few winerys to sample their wines. The vineyards are exceptionally well maintained and each winery is a grand builing with options to take tours of vineyards etc. We go directly for the wine tasting areas! Ad and Kathie are lucky and get free ice-wine tasting in one of the Winerys. Despite the hefty price tag of each bottle of wine, Ad's not impressed by Ice-wine much too sweet. Among the wines we try out include; Riesling, Gawuvertzraminer, vidal, cabarenet franc, Inniskillen and Peller Estates wines.
After dinner we take a stroll along the Niagara Falls walkway and view both the American and Horseshoe Falls by nite. Both Falls look spectacular at night, when they are lit with various combinations of coloured lights. We are very impressed. The Canadian Falls, have a height of 54 metres (177ft), and the American Falls, at 56 metres (184ft) high, are truely one of the natural wonders of the world. It is estimated that 20% of the worlds fresh water passes over the Niagara Falls
Afterwards we wander around Niagara town which is a hub of activity, all neon lights and casino's, quiet gaudy. Before checking into Rainbow hostel (approx $50 canadian), its not a great hostel with no hot water this weekend, oh what fun!!! :)
