Key West the most southernly city in the states
Trip Start Apr 08, 2005

The drive to Key west is mainly crossing bridges with ocean on either side of the road! Storm Arlene is further south of Key West but the sky is black, some heavy showers of rain and its quiet windy so the tropical caribean island that is Key West is not at its optimum today :(
Nonetheless, Key West is a very touristic spot and the locals are much friendlier than their Miami counterparts, and there are much fewer Cubans
We have dinner in the Hogs Breath in the centre of town, Fergus has dolphin for dinner! It is a white fish and really tasty. We take our own self guided tour of Key west which encompassed the harbour, tall ships, shore, Ernest Hemmingways home, drive through the residential area's (v well maintained, all houses are very much an old style). Before the drive back to Miami, we try some Key Lime Pie (a lemon meringue only with lime instead of lemon - excellent!) and purchase numerous souvenir t-shirts.
Back in Miami we have a nitemare time trying to find a suitable hotel. When we eventually find 2 motels, both in close proximity of one another, we realise they are not quiet what they seem..... Fergus makes enquiries at the front desk only to learn that they charge $25 for 2 hours and one motel will not rent out the room for the nite despite the fact they have almost no customers, its hire for 2hours only!. Despondently, we continue our search until we finally find a dump at $50!!
