We head to Downtown San Antonio to visit the historical and sacred Alamo. We enjoy a very interesting tour and video of the history of the Alamo. It was here that 200 men fought for 13 days in 1836 against the arrival of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army. These 200 men were a mix of revolutionaries and royalists, all with one common theme - a desire to obtain independence from Mexico. These men used the Alamo as a fortress to defend Texas and although they were outnumbered and ultimately beaten, their objective was to buy time for other defenders. Just before the dawn of March 6th (the final day of battle), Santa Annas soldiers attacked the Alamo by suprise and finally defeated the Texans. The Alamo is now known for where a heroic struggle against overwhelming odds took place - a place where men made the ultimate sacrafice for freedom.
In spite of this defeat, their plan ultimatly worked. A few weeks later, hundreds of Texans (given courage and renewed hope by the bravery of the men in the Alamo), rose up against Santa Anna and defeated him, winnig Texas its independance. Texas was then an independant state for 9 years until it joined the US in 1845.

We then left the city north bound for New Braunfels.
At New Braunfels, we hired out tubes to float down the river Comal for about 90 mins. Basically its a large tire tube with a base inserted and you quiet literally float down the river. It turned out rather expensive as Adeline lost her bandana (sorry cat) and Fergus lost his sunglasses! Some Americans floated down in style, they had one tube for the cooler filled with iced beer and a radio tied on top!

We drove onto Austin where in the entertainment district on 6th street, we enjoyed a few beers in Coyote Uglys. Just like in the film with the chicks dancing and singing on the bar top! The city was literally roaring, with hundreds of Harley Davidson motor-cycles roaring up and down the Streets. A big State rally was taking place and was in Austin for the weekend!
