Day 42
Coastal Drive

We started off with a couple quick things in Monterey. I needed to get an oil change and some basic tune up stuff done with the van this morning so I went took care of that. After that we headed over to the Dennis the Menace Park and played around a bit. It was a very cool kids park with an old train engine and some really nice playground equipment. Pretty popular place too. After that we headed over to one of the public beaches for E to get a little more beach time. It is so awesome that you can just park your car and hit a beach just about anywhere in CA. After getting thoroughly burned we drove down to Carmel by the Sea. It's a very ritzy area with beautiful beaches. Some of the nicest we've seen. But, the sun was about 90 minutes from setting, so we hit the road to see if we could find a good place down the way a bit. Most of today was more driving, but a drive we were looking forward to. We have always wanted to do a drive down the California coast, so we decided on the way back down from San Francisco that this was the time to do it. We saw a little on the way into Monterey, but today was amazing. Many of you have probably heard of it, but we driving into the Big Sur area. I had heard of it somewhere, but I did not realize it would be so amazing. We had to stop over and over to get out and take photos. Adeana and I were ooooing and awwwing and Ethan hung in there with us for awhile, but then he had had about enough of that. I and remember when my parents did this stuff to me as a kid too, so we tried to be as conservatively flabergasted as possible. We caught the sunset in the Sand Dollar picnic area in the Los Padres National Forest. Such vivd colors. Probably the best of our trip. Gotta say though, after dark highway 1 gets a little creepy. This road winds a lot and you're often feet from going off the road into the ocean. So, after another of that we called a night and finished San Simeon right near the Hearst Castle, which we would love to see, but it's a bit pricey for this trip, so maybe later.
