Day 1 - Transit
Had planned to do something in the morning before heading out to the airport but had done everything in the nearby area and didnt want to go to far given I had to get a bus back into town.

Ended up catching an earlier bus into town and spent 5hrs killing time at the airport before my flight. definately should have caught an earlier one since it would have given me some time to do something in Waikiki.

After getting into Waikiki, checked in and basically called it a night.

Day 2 - North Shore - Waimea Valley Park and Bay, Puu O Mahuku Heiau Monument, Sunset Beach
Had originally planned to spend a night or two out at the North shore but given the bus doesnt allow luggage wasnt to sure how to get out to the hostel so decided to just do a day trip. Didnt leave til about 10am and it was noon by the time I got to the bay.

Nice bus trip up to Waimea Bay with a view of the mountains in the background. After getting to the Bay decided to wander up to the park for an hour or two. The park cost a wopping $13 to get in which I thought was a bit steep and given I had gotten there so late in the day I couldnt spend to much time there. Ended up wandering to the waterfall where you could go for a swim and found out once again that I was in america. By that I mean that I found two life guards stationed by the falls to watch people swim. Got to say for a country of individual free rights people seem to be a lot like children. That is they want someone else to be responsible for their actions. Here its having life guards to baby sit. In most other places its about having to sign a waiver to say that you understand the risk and wont hold someelse responsible (ie sue them) because you've decided to do something that involves some risk and you might get hurt.

Had a nice walk through the park. Basically it appears to be a big botanical garden with lots of plants from all over the place. also would have liked to have wandered up the sides of the valley but all the trails were closed. Got the impresson (due to the number of signs) that this was due to the possibility of rock falls even though the chances were slim.

After wandering the valley for a bit headed back to the bay for a few photos. Seems like a popular place for a swim and would be definately better than the busier beaches at Waikiki. Decided to wander up to Puu O Mahuku Heiau Monument since it got me up to the top of one of the valley walls. Followed the road up to the ruins which in themselves werent particulary interesting. Ended up following a few small trails which gave a nice view of the valley bay and coast line in that direction. Unfortunately a hill was in the way and blocking the view of the coastline in the other direction.

After getting back down from the hill it started to rain again so had to hide under some palms until it passed before continuing down the coast. Ended up getting down to Sunset beach where there were nice golden sands and a bit of surf. No huge waves but having talked to someone earlier I would have had to of gone down to the north shore as soon as I arrived in hawaii to see the big waves since it was the end of the session in which they appeared.

Ended up watching some surfers do their thing and could see a bunch of photographers with telescopic lenses taking photos so I guess a few pros must have been out. While watching the surf was lucky enough to see some whale. at first I only noticed a large white splash but could then see a number of whales (guessing humpback) launching the front half of their bodies into the air and then come crashing back down onto the surface of the water.

Just before dark decided to head back and decided to take the bus the continued around the island. Probably would have been a good idea if it had been light since it would of given me a few of the other side of the island but given it was dark I guess there really wasnt much point in it. Besides which I had to change buses two times along the way and since I had expected to be able to stay on one bus I started to wander if I would end up at the place I had been expecting to get to.

Day 3 - Leaving Hawaii
Shuttle to airport wasnt til 10am so decided to go for one last wander around town and down to the beach. While down  their found that a number of homeless people were using the beachside shelter as a place for spending the night out of the rain.

Ended up spending the day basically on a plane. If you ignore the change in time difference it ended up being 15 hours in transit with me arriving in Naha at about 4am the following morning.
