Day 1
Caught the boat to San Marcos. Given it was Sunday not much open and not much going in. After finding the hotel decided to go for a walk along the road towards San Pedro. Ended up reaching San Paubli and recalled a few comments made by people that the locals typically werent the banditos but rather people from san Paublo. After a quick walk through town headed back to San Marcos. Thankfully without incident.

Besides wandering around town a bit and going to get something to eat, didnt do much else. Was feeling sore from hiking 3 volvanos in a week, one yoga session, one dive and a two hour long game of football. All without being aclimatized.

Room in the Hotel I stayed was right near the street and I could hear the local traffic drift by during the day. Especially the kids from the two families that lived nearby. One Mayan, one foreign and both with a cafe-restuarant. Also provided some nice mello background music. Spending a few hours listening to life go by definately gave the impression of life in a small community.

Akso during the day I finally got some idea as to the cause of at least some of the explosions I have been hearing over the last few days around the lake. seems the local kids have gotten there hands on some fireworks and think its a great laught to let bangers off around the lake. depending of the spot, the geography can amplify the sound and make for a pretty large bang. While I wouldnt be willing to say that all the bangs were caised by bangers, I would say that the majority were.

Day 2
Had my second dive organised for today but had time to do a yoga class. Unlike the last one didnt think to much of the class structure or instructor. Maybe becauses its a class and there are other suplimentary classes (being generous) but the class seemed all over the shop without building up to anything. I did enjoy the partner excercises though. Definately something different for me.

Had a quick breakfast at the cafe near the hotel and caught ta boat to Santa Cruz for my second dive. Unfortunatly doing the dive with a second person and while they had some bouancy issues they did OK and didnt affect my dive to much. Ended up spending 10-20min looking for thermal hot spots. Andy pointed out that there is a fault line that runs across the lake and that when you stick you hand into the ground in some spots it gets very hot. Unfortunately due to all the silt these spots would be harder to find.

In the end managed to find a few places where my hand could feel heated water and a coupel a spots where I had to take my hand out due to teh amount of heat. Felt both hot gravel and hot mud mixtures along the way. Part of the trick was to look for discolouration of the ground caused by algae growth due toi the heat.

Diffinately lots of silt on the lake bottom. While probably not the best idea, ended up sticking my hand in the mud (finger tip to wrist) and plowing through the silt. Very weird slimy feeling. Ended the dive swimming past some reeds which sort of seemed like an underwater bamboo forest.

After the dive decided to head to Panajachel just to check it out. Not a particularly exciting town compared to the rest. This looked very much like a tourist-vacation town with lots of shops, hotels and restuarants sround but not to many locals. That is at least not til I got closer to the river which seemed to be more of the spot where people congregated.

Also being here reminded me of a previous observation. That is, kites seem to be a big thing here. Seems like there is always a few large kite shops and a large number of kids flying kites over any given town. I know there is a kit festival on around this time of year (in a couple of towns) and wonder if the kites here have anything to do with it or whether like americans and frisbees, you have guatemalians and kites.

Caught a late boat back and again had an early night.

Day 3
Decided to hang out one more day and gave the yoga place another try. Different instructor today and felt the class had a bit more structure but still wasnt particulary impressed with the class. Once again maybe it because its part of a course rather than standalone class. In the end did a couple of interesting poses I havent done for a while like crow pose. Suprised I felt as comfortable and lasted for as long as I did. Guess the karate must be doing something since I certainly havent been doing much yoaga over the years.

After the class decided on doing a second class which I didnt mind though I do have a preference for a little less instruction when it comes to poses. Again did the standard fair with a couple of interesting poses like the shoulder stand. Guess If I want to do back bends or hand stands IŽd need to find a more advanced class or one that at least allowed people to take different options.

Had breakfast and crashed out for a bit before deciding to have a massage. While it wrenched out my muscles I guess I had been hoping for something else. Dont ask me what. Not sure.

Finished the day having a bit of a wander, grabbing a meal and not much else.
