Where I stayed
Camping Prairie creek redwood state park
arcata transit center
Arrived in Arcata at around 11pm since the bus was 1 hour late. Didnt want to look for a hotel so ended up sleeping on a bench near the transit centre. Not sure if it was a good idea at the time since there was another guy wandering around the area and there also seemed to be a lot of derelicts around the place when I woke up. Found that the paper bag with my grapes in it gone but thankfully nothing else missing.
Caught the bus to Prairie Creek Rewood state park and had planned to go hiking straight away. Unfortunately thought I had lost my credit card. Two down one to go. Guesing it fell out my passport walleton the bus when Ilooked at my bus ticket. Normally sits in the passport holder so dont have to worry about it but unfortunately this time it was just siting around loose.
Ended up loosing a couple of hours looking for enough quarters to make the call to cancel the card
Ended up doing a short walk near the campground and spent the night in praire creek campground.
Followed the West ridge to the coast. Lots of big tall and wide trees. They also appear to collect in clumps. Ended up reading that the trees can start regrowing new branches from a trunk resulting in a fairy ring of trees that grow next to each other.
Weather turned crap again.
Had had some blue skies that day before but only grey skies today. Also once I hit the coast all I could see was mist. Guess I was lucky that the trees werent also covered in mist all day. Read that the mist is probably the normal state of teh forest and blue skies are rare. The trees seem to absorb lots of water and then release it creating their own fog
Pitched my tent near the cost but not quite on it. spent the afternoon wander down to the beach and surf.
Followed the coastal trail along the bluffs. Seems like you have the ocean, followed by a small firly flat sand dune and bush area and then the bluffs rising above them with trees growing all over them. Read that the golden clour of the bluffs is due to gold particles in the sand and that at one point the bluffs were mined for gold.
Along the way down the coast wandered up through fern canyon which was a few hundred meters of canyon walls with ferns growing on them. Had to cross the stream a number of times and crawl under and over logs to make my way up stream before looping back above the canyon.
From here headed down to the beach and started walking along the sand. Saw some elk grazing just below the bluff and decided to wander up and take a closer look. Made sure I gave them plenty of space since I didnt want to get charged. Sort of forget how big they really are until you see them standing next to a car.
After watching the elk decided to leave the beach and follow the road to the gold bluff campground before heading upo to the miners ridge campground. Spent the afternoon down on the beach watching the fog slowly lift.
Followed Miners ridge back to the Praire Creek camground since I had an early bus to catch the next morning
Lots of cyclists in the campground. Appears that cycling down the west coast is a popular thing to do for both locals and tourists. With the coastline, redwood parks and general scenary I could definately see it as being an interesting ride.
Headed out early for the bus and couldnt remember whether to expect it before 8:30am or 8:45 am. Had made a reservation to get picked up from near the campground but had also heard stories of drivers forgetting to pick people up.
At 8:22am saw what looked like a bus with california transportation written on the side and thought I had missed the bus. Started thinking about whether I could change my flight and how much money I had lost in bus and air fair (to LA). Thnakfully it wasnt my bus which showed up 30 minutes later to pick me up.
