Day 1
Since I had managed to get out from my hike before lunch I decided that I would try to get out to Mariposa grove to see the big trees. Had a few hours to kill before the 3:30pm bus to the grove arrived so decided to go to the visitor centre to make sure that a campsite would be available. Found that the board in the visitor centre said the campground was full. Definately unexpected.

Still wanted to go so headed tpo the wilderness centre to see if I could get a permit for the trails near wawona so I could camp out there. Unfortunately they were not back country hikes so I couldnt get a permit. Luckily though the ranger rang the campgrouns to ask if there were any sites and I found out that 3 were still available.

Given the bus didnt leave for a while it was possible that I would get there and no sites would be available. Ranger convinced me (not to hard to do) to catch the bus and try to get a site. My tents small and since I got no transport even if there were no sites left there should be somewhere (hopefully) where I could pitch the tent. Worst case, I would have to wander out into the bush off the side of teh road and pitch it. besides being illegal, didnt really want to do this since it would mean I would need to pack my tent the next day and carry everything around in my pack.

Arrived in wawona and wander past the old town buildings on my way to the reservation office. Ranger there just sent me to the park and luckily they still had a site available for me.

Day 2

Resonable walk from campground to Wawona where I was going to catch teh shuttle bus to the grove. First one left at 9am and while I was in the store buying some food and coffee a tour group rocked up. Luckily I rejoined the bus line before the second tour group rocked up and so I was able to get on the first bus.

At the grove I ended up wandering around to all the main trees on the map. Some of the trees were the Grizzily tree which was big with some great big branches at the top, clothes pin which had a split in the middle of it, tunnel tree (has a hole through which you can walk), telescope tree which had a hole running down the middle of it and the faithful couple which was two trees whose trunks had fused together at the base.

Found out that some of the trees are over 3000 years old and that the bark make them fire resistent. Also found out that these trees could possibly live forever given the right circumstances since there is nothing that really kiils the trees and they dont die of old age. Most likely to die from to much weight (ie snow on top) causing them to fall over.

Wandered over to the valley lookout point and had thought of walking back to town but decided to do the outer loop back to the bus stop and bus it back.
