Where I stayed
I headed to Cairns city centre at around seven in the morning to catch the bus to Mission beach. The bus journey only took a couple of hours to get there. I was only going to stay one night here just to check it out.
When I arrived at mission beach. I had know where to go. I hadn't booked a hostel or anything because I was expecting a little town but there was nothing like that. Just a Woolworth's and a small row of shops. Luckily there were two people from two different hostels waiting for the bus to turn up and they try and persuade you to go to there hostel.
I picked Scotty's because it was pretty cheap and it had a big swimming pool. The beach was also only thirty seconds away. The whole hostel was really well set up. The staff were really nice and friendly
Whilst I was here, I wanted to explore the area. I asked reception if there is any forest walks around here. They told me most of them were closed because of the cyclone which hit three months ago. She said one walk is still open and that if we get enough people to go they will take us.
In the end we rounded up about a dozen people to go on the little walk a d a swim in the natural pool. It was just a short drive away from the hostel. When we were driving there you could just see the damage of the rainforest when the cyclone hit.
To be honest the walk wasn't nothing special, didn't see any wildlife at all just a few spiders. It took about twenty minutes to walk around then we finished up by the natural pool. I think most of us jumped in for a swim because it was really hot. We stayed in here for a good twenty minutes or so before heading back to the hostel.
On our way back the driver took us to a liquor store. It must of been the best liquor store I've ever seen, it was a drive through store. You literally drive the car into the shop and then get your booze. Most people hoped out to get there drink for the evening.
Once we arrived back at the hostel everyone hung around the pool area but I wanted to go and have a look at the beach. It was a nice looking beach, very quiet for how big it was. I went for a little paddle just to cool down. After a hour or so down the beach I went back to catch up with everyone else.
In the evening not mug happened really. We just mainly chilled out drinking that cheap and nasty goon wine. We had a good laugh playing these drinking games. We stayed up until early in the morning just chatting about our travels ect.
I liked mission beach mainly because of the hostels atmosphere. There wasn't much to do here but it was just nice to relax and soak up the sun. I met some cool people here, which we said we would meet up again.
