They say that it's not a matter of if you will get sick when traveling in India, but when. Two days ago that came painfully true when a cannonball seemed to appear in our guts simultaneously. Near as we can tell the offending item was a fried samosa purchased on the streets of Mandore. Erin had the good sense to decide it didn't taste very good and only ate half, while I unfortunitely ate two. A long night of delirous dreams and trips to the bathroom followed for both of us.
The next day we were traveling to Udaipur by way of Ranakpur, a 6 hour ride could have been terribly unpleasant by bus. Luckily we decided to spring for a private driver (Rs2750) so it was quite comfortable. When we told the driver we were not feeling well he immediately identified our ailment. "Ah, loose motions," he said while rubbing his belly. Indeed.
With the assistance of some Cipro and atropine we're feeling much better now and are able to enjoy the fantastic food available in Udapur. I've learned a few lessons from this minor ordeal. First, street food can be delicious, but be wary of samosas that are stacked up 10 layers tall and aren't selling all that fast. They've probably been there a while. Second, a good collection of meds from your doctor is a nice thing to bring along.
