We have arrived in Delhi after a near miss on our layover in Newark. We arrived in Newark at 8:45 pm for an 8:50pm flight to Delhi, had to run the length of the airport, and arrived in the nick of time wheezing and sweating. They held the place for 30 minutes so they could load our baggage.
Once in Delhi we flagged a "pre-paid" taxi who had absolutely no idea where our hotel was. So we got the midnight tour of Connaught Place in Delhi when neither of us could barely keep our eyes open. This was our first brush with street beggars, stray dogs and a severe language barrier (Erin had to write down the Hotel name and the taxi drivers stopped 6-7 times to show others the name and ask where the hotel was located).
When we finally arrived at our Hotel 55 (nice for Delhi) we popped an ambien and peacefully slept away our first night in India, while horns blared and dogs barked outside below our window.
The next day we enjoyed the first of many delicious street-vendor samosas, which cost 20 rupees (only 5 in Jaisalmer), which is the equivalent of fifty cents or less.
