We had to overnight in Jerantut(the last big town before the NP), before catching the local bus out to Taman Negara National Park. Before getting to Jerantut we didnt even know there was a local bus out to the NP....no one mentioned it, not even LP...it just bangs on about complicated short bus runs and ferry boats. 6RM right to the park entrance , one and a half hours away aint bad :)
THE WEE VILLAGE JUST OUTSIDE THE PARK IS DRY :( Not a bottle of beer to be had...anywhere! We best make this a quick visit then! Taman Negara is (according to the hype) the oldest rainforest in the world! We heard some one banging on about ...'130 million years old'...whatever, its an impressive place. Its HUGE! There are hides and campgrounds inside the park so you can stay in there for weeks if you want. Its tricky to spot wildlife in any Jungle, but in the 2 days(no nights, we went back to the village) we were trekking about, we saw a bit. Lots of wild boar..though not all seemed so wild(check out the pic of adam) lizards, weird birds, squirrels, including a giant squirrel(about 3 times the size of a normal one and cream coloured...very pretty)and obviously all the critters and birds that live there too. A couple of girls at park HQ told the park ranger that they'd spotted 5 elephants while out at one of the hides...LUCKY or what! Its soooo hard to spot elephant! Unfortunately my (gail) cold has turned in to a hacking cough that i cant shake off just yet! so 2 days in that heat and humidity nearly killed me. For some reason whenever Im due to be heading off in to unhospitable malay environments, I get a mingin cold and suffer throughout. I climbed Mt.Kinabalu (in 2003)with a cold, all the while sucking on Adams ventolin.
We did the cheesy canopy walkway in the park too! Theyre a right laugh, watching the moronic british lads try to scare their girlfriends by swinging the bridge and shouting 'whooooooahhhhh'. You just LONG for the bridge to give way...but it never does :( Obviously Adam LOVED the canopy, he loves all things high up and unstable...you can just see the joy on his face. He was gutted when we'd finished and had to come down. :) Its exactly 8 weeks til we come home. WOW its SOOO close now. 8 weeks is nowt! its going to fly over. Were both ready to come home, I think its just psychological acceptance tho, not a sign that we dont want to be here. We'll never regret doing this trip, ups and down, laughs and cry's....its been GREAT! but it aint over yet, lots more can go wrong :)...
Were heading off to the Perhentian Islands next, for yet more, probably undeserved, lying on a beach and drinking beer. We'll stay there for about 5 days before heading back to BK for the flight to Delhi on the 16th August...second from last flight! :) More thumbnails ...
