Bajawa is a nice enough little town, but the real pull here is the traditional villages in the hills around. We were accosted by a tout on arrival and he spent about 6 hours pursuing us trying to get us to pay him big bucks for a tour of the villages. He even tried the 'one of the villages is having a ceremony and there will be animal sacrifices,!!!' one, but we still werent handing over 50 bucks! we arranged a bemo (indonesias answer to the tuk-tuk)to go to the best village in the area and paid 6 bucks each to say the prices in LP are slightly out of touch with todays reality. In fairness the price of petrol is going stupid here and every filling station has massive queues outside as the panic sets in and people buy before it gets even more pricey. I wouldnt be surprised if there was a fuel crisis here in the very near future. Prices for everything are skyrocketting accordingly.
The village was called Bena. its two rows of traditional thatch and bamboo houses with the communal court yard area in the centre. The courtyard has the graves of the villagers and the ceremonial alters etc. The village was very pretty, if rather touristy now. We bought a cute little bowl and spoon made from coconut shell and wood, and Adam bought yet another big machete! We will need a wall in our next house just for the knives!
