Flag of Peru  , Sacred Valley,
Tuesday, September 10, 2013

I came down with a sore throat Monday night, so I hoped & prayed I wouldn't be too sick to travel to Machu Picchu on Tuesday. It didn't matter how I felt this morning, I was going. We traveled to the Urabamba Valley where we caught the train that took us to Aqua Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo now. There we boarded a bus that travels quickly up a switchback road to the Machu Picchu Park. Many people were there, but Jorge told us there have been many, many more than what we saw. I feel lucky because the Peruvian govt is going to start limiting how many people can come into the park & also what areas of the park will be open to meandering around. The trail up to the Temple of the Sun is already limited now by permit to a certain number of people.
Jorge had us follow him up the trail to this magical city in single file..climbing silently, stopping frequently to take in the energy of the mountain. We did an exercise at one point where we looked in to the sun, then closed our eyes & rotated our eyes in a clockwise motion behind our lids to open our 3rd eye. When we got close to the top, he had us join hands & close our eyes again & sidestep our way higher to level ground. We continued to sidestep along level ground until he told us to open our eyes. Before us lay this magical city, & he said "Welcome home" - it was emotionally overwhelming.
We went to another area where we could rest among the rocks & meditate for about 20 minutes. The rest of the day, we meandered through the ruins.
I didn't feel well, not well enough to hike around as much as I would have liked, but that was my lesson I think. I didn't need the physical contact to feel the ethereal energy of this powerful, city of light.

That evening we stayed in Aqua Calientes, which is adjacent to the Urabamba River. It was very charming with lots of shops & restaurants in the narrow pedestrian streets. I could hear the river from my room.
