The last stop of my trip. The capital of Chile is only a few hours of Mendoza and the drive passes through some of the most amazing snow capped peaks in the Argentine Cordillera. Although our bus was late, and generally stank of urine I was glued to the window for most of the journey.

Chantal and I arrived in the hostel by late evening, after an entertaining taxi ride. When we jumped into the taxi and gave the address the driver was certain he knew where the hostel was. Only 10 minutes into the drive does he pull out a street atlas of Santiago and hand it to me - I had to read the map and direct him to the tiny alley where we were staying. When he asked me where we were, I just stared blankly and replied "Somos en Santiago seņor."

By the time we got to the hostel the first thing I wanted to do was go on the Internet - my STEP results were being released. I got into Warwick! That means in October I'll be starting my undergraduate degree. After that great news the plan was to start drinking and celebrate, but I ended up in bed by 11PM.

Today we decided to walk around the downtown area. It's cheaper to pay the hostel in dollars to avoid the 19% tax that's whacked on payments in Chilean Pesos, so we first went to exchange some money. Most of the day though was spent around Cerro San Cristobal that has a large statue of the Virgin Mary at the peak, and overlooks all of Santiago. I would have got a great shot had it not been for the smog covering the city. There is also a large zoo midway up the hill; it's been a long time since I've been to a zoo and it was actually quite fun to just walk around for a while.

This hostel seems to organise something every night... tonight is free pizza - I don't need to be told twice.
