If there is a bus ride I do not want to do again, it is the one from La Paz to Uyuni. If the road (if it can be called a road, more like a collection of rocks) wasn't bad enough, the freezing temperatures and a seat adjacent to the toilet ensured an uncomfortable ride.

We arrived in Uyuni early in the morning with the intention of leaving for the salt flats the same day. However, tours to Tupiza are over 1200 Bolivianos (our plan was to finish the tour in Tupiza, which is close to the Argentine border and then take a bus from there to Salta, rather than return to Uyuni to take a bus to Tupiza). I wasn't prepared, or in fact able to spend that much money and decided to leave the group and organise my own tour. There is no shortage of tour companies in Uyuni but it was almost 9:30 and tours leave at 10 usually... which meant I was too late to go today. I've just come back from Colca Tours - got a good deal of 600Bs for a 3 day tour including a sleeping bag, departing tomorrow.

I won't bore anyone with a description of Uyuni, it really is just a few streets filled with tourist agencies and some small shops. However, I have found some of the best empanadas here (they are like Cornish pasties, but more Latin). The street food here is actually quite tasty and flavoursome - Bolivian food can be quite bland in general so this is a good change.

I don't really want to stay in Uyuni longer than I have to so I am going to book a bus ticket to Tupiza tonight.
