After a bus, train, skyrail, walk, shuttle, coach, bus I was at my pit. The hostel was ok, I got a room to myself for 4 quid a night and I was pretty exhausted by the time I got there.
The next few days were a blur, between sleeping, eating, sleeping, skyping, emailing, sleeping, wandering around, eating, skyping, sleeping.
Here is a selection of the food I ate!
Delicious food! Very cheap when you are prepared to eat from local markets.
My Xmas day was exactly how I wanted it to be. I woke up and enjoyed some chocolate coins for my breakfast, courtesy of my little mum....ahem, and two bags of Minstrels. I spoke to my middle brother Pete, my sister in law Kim and her family, Loren and Joan, and Michelle and Chris. I was the computer screen getting passed around while the Canadian bunch opened their presents/gifts on Xmas eve. Sadly, my little nephew wasn't feeling so well so he went to bed early. It was great to be involved, say hello to everyone and see my middle brother on xmas day. Forgot when the last time that was? I also had a couple of things to open, mainly cards but I also got a cool snapfish photo album of my little nephew from Pete and Kim and my brothers inlaws (Loren and Joan) kindly donated US$25 to the wandering gingerman. On a separate note, the UK inland revenue decided to contribute to my trip as well, many happy returns HMRC!
I said goodbye to the Canadians around lunchtime, and popped out to search for something Christmassy to eat! I found it! Roasted chicken, mash with gravy, but, the meal came with a small amount of Spaghetti Bolognese?? Well, it was great to find some gravy, and it was more like Smash! I treated myself to a Baskin Robbins after, very fitting seeing as I used to live practically next door to one in Brooklyn.
I slept some of the afternoon and picked up some snacks to munch on in my room. The hostel was empty, but I really wasn't interested in talking to randoms, I was happy to wait to speak to my family and friends around the globe.
I spoke to my Pops and Lynn in the late afternoon, we hadn't spoken for a while due to skype issues but that's all sorted now. It was great to chat to him! I'm waiting for him to pack his bag and join me!! Haha, not sure his stomach could cope with the food...........he typically reads my blog during his lunch break, not all his sandwiches go down well!!
After I spoke to my eldest brother Dave with my Mum and Andy. All I heard about was beef, trimmings, lamb later in the week, and how mum actually got very little food in this year and not a twiglet in sight!! That'll change next year!! But then it got me thinking about twiglets. I had watched my middle brother in Canada open a packet and it turns out my little nephew loves them! He's definitely a Border twiglet muncher!! Hopefully Dave boy will bring some out to Bangkok!!
I also got to chat to a couple of friends and email other friends. A wonderful relaxed day and I wouldn't have it any other way. I did wander out during the day, to walk off my Xmas lunch! I popped into the town centre and took a little look around China town and the canal.
The majority of residents may not celebrate Christmas but they are still happy to join in the commerical aspect, just as I would join in Dewali, or a Chinese New Year. There were more Xmas trees here than in Perth, but seeing as it was a Sunday, the town, roads and Malls were jam packed!! The Malaysian word for hour is jam, so when parking your car you need to decide how many jams you need!
Boxing day was a blur. I spoke on skype some more, I think, but then the wifi went down in the afternoon so I had to get out of my pit! The bathroom in the hostel was pretty disgusting, it didn't have a flush, zero paper and the shower was in there too so who knows what you were standing on/in. I also got a little ill on Xmas day so I prefered to run to the local Mall than use the hostel facilities. The hostel worker was more keen on sleeping than trying to fix the wifi. My treat for Boxing day was a trip to Sentral bus station to get an onward bus ticket and then go watch Mission Impossible 4 at the cinema for a couple of quid!! Bargain!! It was pretty good, it helped having a more prominent role for Simon Pegg.
My last morning, I rode the Menara Taming Sari which raises you up above the skyline of Melaka. After this, I was ready to leave my pit and get back to the travels. I caught up on more sleep, caught up with lots of people and wanted to get back on the road.
I caught a local bus back to Sentral bus station and boarded my coach to Singapore, not knowing whether I would make the entire journey without the need for a bathroom. Sadly, there were no bathroom facilities on the coach!! Oh man!!
Next stop, Singapore.
