Plovdiv, Bulgaria - The bus from Sofia to Plovdiv only took 2.5 hours. A long walk from the bus station and I found another Hostel Mostel. At the hostel I chatted to a lad on reception, asking him about onward travel to Varna. He gave me a suitable train time the following day and then I asked about the Bulgaria v England game. He didn't care. He said watching his country was no longer worth it. 'Not like in 94' I said. Back then, Bulgaria beat a strong German side in the quarter finals of the World Cup in the USA. They beat the defending World Champions and a team who made the final of Euro 92 and won Euro 96. A very strong German side. Remember Letchkov? The balding player who headed the winner against Germany? A great team, lead by Stoichkov, who jointly won the Golden boot for the tournament. They were beaten in the semi's by Roberto Baggio and eventually finished 4th. I was disappointed for the lad on reception, I certainly feel his pain.

Plovdiv acts more like a town than a city. There is a new part and an historical old part. I walked my way through the new part to find the hidden treasures of the old city of Plovdiv. Partly resting on a steep hill, partly covering a busy highway. The streets were lined with large cobbled stones, the ones where you'll twist your ankle without treading carefully. The streets were random, no specific grid or structure to the layout. There was fancy bars, souvenir shops and many old and wearing buildings. I enjoyed getting lost in the maze of the old city.

The new part of the city was very open plan, pedestrianized and full of fountains, and young people milling around. There was a positive energy to the city and I'm glad I left Sofia to see more of this country.

The hostel again cooked up a dinner. Some chilli/rice thing that was baked in the oven, served with a beer. How sweet. The hostel also offered free breakfast, I must have eaten half a loaf of bread, with some chopped up tin ham! Not bad.

I exchanged another book and settled in for the evening. The Genesis Code, not a bad read. The night was full of some old lady snoring her head off and some Asian dude constantly clicking his knuckles and huffing at the snoring woman. I guess he was unaware of his own irritating snoring. I made the mistake of sleeping without a sheet and woke to bites on my arms and ankles. Great.

Next stop, Varna.
