Where I stayed
Met rest of Komodo Dive Centre cast and crew at 0720 and headed out on boat, which was much better equipped than previous (with between dive doughnuts..yum!). First site after 2 hours 15 was Lighthouse Rock, which was a drift dive, my first, and ace! I dove with another beginner who had six dives and we had a divemaster looking out for us. A went with more advanced guys. Coral was stunning and saw loads of reef fish including two frog fish, a Napoleon wrasse, tuna and lion fish, as well as white tipped reef sharks!! Chewed through air really quickly so my buddy and I ended up on the alternate regulators for last ten minutes, tied to the divemaster which I hated! After short boat trip arrived at Castle Rock, a tricky site with strong currents but the tide was in our favour. Descended to 23m then worked way up the reef wall. Currents pulling in all directions and I found it a hard dive. Did see a turtle though! And more sharks above us. Air better this time and ascended after about 35 mins. Third dive at The Cauldron, a huge sand bowl that had formed where two headlands meet and the current rushes through. Started as a great drift dive gathering speed as we shot through the underwater channel like superman but then were flung out into the blue and had to kick like crazy to get back to reef. All quite stressful and air intensive!! Surfaced and waited for other advanced divers to emerge. Then headed back to Labuan Bajo, lying on sun deck (in shade!) to snooze! Beautiful sunset behind us as entered harbour. Dinner at Treetops bar and restaurant. A had a giant grupper fish. Tomorrow to Rinca island (less well known but supposedly better island than Komodo to see dragons).
