Hawaii Week 1

Hello again!
Well we have moved on to the next stage of your trip - Hawaii, and its just brilliant. Flew into Wakiki on O'ahu on Sunday and stayed till Thu. Now we are up in the North Shore, where the major surfing takes place! Since we have arrived we have spent lots of time on the gorgeous beaches and great shops. Wakiki is full of shops and very tourist. We have been to an amazing marine preserve park - Hanauma Park. It was like swimming in a goldfish bowl, there was loads of fish. One of the best activities we have done was our kayaking at Kailua Bay. We kayaked out to Flat island and walked around that. Then Kayaked to one of the best beaches in Hawaii, has the finest sand in the world created from parrot fish poop!At this beach we snorkeled and had lunch, then in the afternoon we did a bit of Kayak surfing before heading back. Saw several sea turtles which heather loved.
We are now based on the North Shore where in winter they have the massive waves. Had a strange encounter when i arrived at the North Shore. Arrived to find two guys I was at Bristol Uni with staying in the same lodge (For you uni guys it was Dan (sciocology) and Luke (Law) from Hiatt Baker). Then met a girl I did geography with at Uni (Caroline). Really strange as out of a lodge of 9, 4 were all from Bristol in the same years, but was nice to see them! Today we are cycling to some of the famous beaches such as Sunset beach, the Banzai Pipeline and the Three Tables. Surf is quite calm so might just bodyboard. Went to the surf museum yesterday which was also really cool. Like most of the shops and things up here, you cant guarantee they will be open, cos when the surf is up everything closes. Its a really chilled and laid back place. We can also tick off another must do: having the famous 'shaved ice'. Like slush puppies but more frozen (see photos). Its massive over here.
We could stay at the North Shore for ages, but we are flying out to another Hawaii island tomorrow - The Big Island. I'm really excited about this one, as a geography geek because i get to go to the volcano's and watch them bubbling away! Hopefully we are going to get a jeep out with some of the girls we met here. Abi apart from the amazing travelling experiences your tan is just SO not fair! The weather in the UK is driving me mad - Mon to Fri, glorious sunshine, Sat to Sun, rain. I decided the only way to improve the situation was to resort to fake tan so I now have stripy ornage legs and look like Tony the Tiger! Seriously you two get to eat in the cheesecake factory! how flippin cool! oh yeah and the beaches do look amazing as well, i am actually jealus as u like, guess what! its raining here rite at this moment! You dont know how jealous i am! Went surfing at the wkd to newquay, it was freezing and the surf was tiny, bet it's a bit nicer there! Glad ur having a great time speak to u soon Gaz x

Sounds like the beaches are amazing and seriously, Abi, meeting people from uni!!?? Your family must have some weird thing about it because your Mum was telling me the other week that it happens to them all the time! It's such a small world really. Hope you both enjoy the volcanoes.

Hi Abi - hope that you are having an amazing time. I've always wanted to go to Hawaii maybe this will spur me on. Have fun peering into volcanoes but be careful as I don't think they were covered in the 'worst case guide'! Stay safe and don't forget to wear sunscreen!. Mx
