So we ended up spending some more time in New Orleans and around the place. There are so many photos of these beautiful old houses that we must have spent a long time looking at a whole lot of them. As far as I can remember, we spent the entire day checking out these amazing homes and then took in a baseball game at the New Orleans Super dome that night. At the time the Super dome was only recently built (I think), there was quite an excitement about it all because it had a retracting roof - which is pretty impressive considering the size of the thing!
I think I blocked it out because it was huge and scary as I have no memory of the game at all, even though there are many many photos of the dome and the game.
Times like this I realise that most of the time I never really knew what was going on
Ever since I have been old enough to think it, I have thought of the world as one single location. Countries and borders are just a means of getting around and knowing where you are at any one time so that you can head on to the next destination with ease. I have never really understood the idea that countries are separate entities in the world and should be treated as such. It is my own assessment that if I had not been exposed to such a large portion of the world when I was young and open to these things, I would have been more critical and I would have noticed all the little differences.
Instead the only differences I ever noticed were ones that are similar to the differences you notice when you go over to your neighbour's house. It smells a little different, the people talk differently and dress a bit differently, but all in all they are still people who live and breathe and eat and sleep. I believe that it is fortunate for me that I saw these things and formed this perception at an early age as I have never been able to fall victim to the tragedy of racism or prejudice.
I really think that it was in these early years that I formed my outlook on the world - a single place with lots of people living in that place. All the signs and borders and names for places are like extremely large suburbs, merely a tool to find our way around. None of these things actually divide the Earth into sections; instead it collects everybody together into one large culture that is the human race.

. The concept of travelling and the idea of checking stuff out for interest's sake never actually computed in my little head. Of course I knew that we were in a different country and I always knew where we were, but none of it really mattered. These days I wish that I had been a bit more attentive when I was young and travelling, but at the same time, I am not sure if the cultures of the world would have seeped inside of me quite as easily if I had been analysing everything.Ever since I have been old enough to think it, I have thought of the world as one single location.
