Just wanted to put in a photo of the Al Ashwar roundabout that my father took as he was flying out to do some surveying for work.
Oman has some amazing roundabouts that are monstrous in size, especially compared to those that we get here in Australia. They usually consisted of a multi-lane road surrounding a large monument or structure of some kind. As you can see in the (rather poor) photo of Al Ashwar - there is a large clock in the centre with two outer walls surrounding it. On the walls were murals, usually involving the Sultan (the 14th of his dynasty I believe) and there was even a small moat surrounding the whole structure on some of the roundabouts.
One of my favourite things as a kid was the tunnels that led under the road and to the center of the roundabouts. They seemed quite long when I was young and whenever I got to the center of the roundabout it was like stepping out onto an island or another world.
