Most of the expats went "Wadi Bashing" on the weekend with their families. Wadi is basically the Arabic name for canyons or dry river beds. Everyone would get in their four wheel drives and head off on the rocky tracks to see the country's beautiful landscapes. I never liked the driving part, it was too hot and far too dusty to be of any useful entertainment to a child, but once we arrived at our destination there was plenty to explore and look at.
To get to Ghubrah Bowl, we had to travel through Wadi Mistal. Along the way there were some houses and fascinating vegetation wherever a Falaj had been built ( Falaj is like an aquaduct or irrigation system for water). Check out the photo album for this entry to see what I mean.
Ghubrah Bowl is about 100km South West of Muscat (as the crow flies) in the Akhdar Mountains and is a large basin surrounded by tall peaks. It was formed from soft rock eroding and leaving the older and harder rock on the surface as this large bowl. As we were leaving Ghubrah Bowl we passed a camel driver - check the photo in the album to get an idea of the typical clothing of Omani men.
