My father was offered a job for the now desolate company SSL, an oil and gas mining company that operated all over the world. The offer was for a position in the Sultanate of Oman and after a short deliberation my parents agreed to make the move. A brave thing for a couple in their mid twenties with two small children.
Dad left first and we sold our house. As mum waited for her paperwork to be done so she could get into Oman, we went and stayed with her parents in Newcastle for five weeks. By then everything had been sorted out and we headed for Muscat via Sydney and Singapore.
