May 21

We left Arles, France at about 4:30 pm and traveled to Nice. In Nice we boarded a night train (see last entry for pictures). Our next stop was in Pisa and from there we needed to take one more train to get to the Cinque Terre (next entry). But, made an impromptu decision and thought since we were in Pisa, we might as well see the famous leaning tower. One minor point to make is that we arrived in Pisa at 5:00 am, 30 minutes earlier than scheduled, and we has no map and no idea how to get to the Tower. We were able to drop off our bags at the train station and, with a little help, we found the tower. By this time, it was maybe 7:00 am. Notice that there are little or no other people in these photos. We had the tower to ourselves at that hour in the morning. By the time we were ready to leave, the security guards were just getting on site, the employees were starting to open the other buildings and the street vendors were beginning to set up shop for the day. After a nice walk back to the train station, we were on the train again, making our way to the Cinque Terre, our first planned stop in Italy.
