Musing #1: I am beginning to cross the street with confidence. It´s quite intimidating at first because the traffic here is a bit crazy. I´ve decided to attempt to follow the locals, but there are many times when I am simply not brave enough. The speed with which the motorcycles, mopeds, and cars maneuver around the insanely narrow streets is rather astonishing.
Musing #2: Cobblestones are entirely too unforgiving on the feet, regardless of what shoes you are wearing. I am suffering during this adjustment period. At times it is hard to look up and around while walking because I am tempted to keep my eyes on the ground as a way to choose the path of least resistance.
Musing #3: The noise outside my window is starting to piss me off. I am hopeful that in time I will adjust. I have been here five nights and feel like I have only slept one. Today I was walking around another part of the city that had really quiet streets and found myself a bit envious.
Musing #4: The language barrier is getting less and less intimidating every day. I have found that a (small) arsenal of basic words and phrases combined with hand gestures seems to work out pretty well. Today we even managed to use the little dictionary to determine how to tell our building owner that our refrigerator was leaking...and he understood! He didn´t do anything about it, but he understood.
Musing #5: I have quickly tired of eating out. I´m already in the routine of having coffee and breakfast at home and am enjoying food from the local market as much as possible. My inadequate kitchen is not helping in this arena but I am doing the best I can! I managed to skip one day of gelato so far, which was truly impressive. I´m in love with the pistachio flavor..
