Cali
Entry 11 of 26 | show all | print this entry |
Once again I am slightly behind on my entries. I will pretend, thus, that I am still in Cali, probably recovering from a hangover. Cali is really hot, and really crazy on the weekends. I was there with the guys I had been traveling with, and we stayed at a place called the Iguana. There is also a place called Caledad House, but, should anyone be heading there, the guy who runs it is apparently a complete jerk. But Iguana was fun, anyway, onto the nightlife...there is a street caleed the Sexta, which is the Zona Rosa of Cali (basically the bar area). It is packed with bars and clubs and cafes...the streets are jammed with taxis and chivas (more in a minute on that) and tons of people. Awesome. Anyway, on Saturday, we took a chiva, which is basically a open sided bus that blasts music and everyone dances while it drives around the city (which led to some interesting pile-ups after sudden stops) and drinks aguadiente, which is a uzo-ish local alcohol that, shockingly, gets tolerable after a few swigs. Andthe chiva drives around for about two hours and drops everyone off at a club. It sounded really cheezy at first, but was actually one of the best nights. And we were the only gringos on it, so it is a very local thing to do. So, four days in Cali, didn´t actually see much of the city itself. Whoops. And I went to this great little place called San Cipriano, which is few hours west of Cali, and is int he middle of the jungle. It is mostly famous for the fact that it is only connected to the road by a train track which is seldom used, so the locals have invented this positively ingenious transport system, which basically consists of a flat boardwith wheels on it, that sort of hug the track, and on one side they have attached a motorbike to the board, so the bike rides on one of the rails, and they put a bench in the middle on the board to sit on. So this rail car of sorts speeds through the jungle at about 30 mph, whipping around corners...and when they meet another car coming the other way, the guys running it just pick theirs up. It was amazing. I didn´t really want to think about the safety aspects of it, but all the locals use it for their kids and such, so it couldn´t have been that bad. Anyway, we survived. and the city itself is tiny but is the start of a series of apparently awesome hikes following a river, with waterfalls and logoons...I say apparently because about 30 minutes into the hike the sky opened up, and thus began a torrential rainfall that did not let up. So the girls I was with wanted to turn back. This is why i don´t travel with girls. Anyway, on Tuesday I left the boys, and Cali, and my sweatshirt, and headed south for Ecaudor.
