Even though the actual bus ride from Prague to Berlin was only 5 hours, much of the day was taken up by the travel. By the time lunch was eaten and a cab ride later, it was nearly 5 pm. Not that the ride was stressful, but upon arriving, I felt like a drink. The actual bus ride was the nicest ride yet. Free wifi, free movies, free coffee, etc made the trip quite comfortable.
The first drink in Berlin? Not a beer...shocking, but I felt like a different refreshment and went with a mojito since cocktails were half price. After a quick Skype call home, I decided it was too early to call it a night and referred to my guide book for a suggestion on dinner. Since most Germans seem to have their heaviest meal at lunch I decided to skip the local fare to tomorrow and stop for a lighter appetizer at a nearby Mexican place. While snacking on my quesadilla, I opted on another non-local refreshment of a strawberry margarita.
Even though I have been in Berlin such a short time, I have already noticed a couple of interesting things. The walk signal seems to still have a communist flair. The word for the womens restroom I would have guessed backwards if it wasn't for a man coming out the other door. Luckily an entrance to the wrong one was avoided. Graffiti is everywhere and most of it is horrible. It seems that they don't take the time to clean in up like we do in the states.
I could not go my first day in Berlin without any german highlights so I referred back to the guidebook for a nearby beer garden. The weather today was around 65 degrees so it was perfect to sit outside and have a few lagers with a group of Australians I met today. Being a mostly travel day, I call it s night at a decent hour so I can hit the pavement hard tomorrow. Berlin....I have arrived!
