Day 11.

A3 C14 odometer reading 6675 miles
Rusty 1200RT odometer reading 28190 miles

Talk about bad luck (some would say just being plain stupid), but as we were ready to start our day at 6am and we had our bags packed, bikes loaded and engines on ..... as I stepped into first gear and started letting out my clutch "KARUNK". I had forgotten to take the disc brake off of the front brake rotor. While mostly embarassing I got off the bike, took the lock off, inspected for damage which there appeared to be none, but then as we started off and we came to a red light I went to engage my front brake, but it was not there.

Long story short is that we inspected my front brake, but could not determine that any damage was caused (not visible). The closest Kawasaki dealer to us was in Stockton, CA, and that would have been a complete disaster as we would have had to make a complete detour to get there. I elected that we proceed "as is", with no front brake, till San Diego, where The House of Motorcycles ( agreed to take me in and inspect my bike so long as we could be there by 4pm PST.

The only real dissapointment that this incident caused was that we forgoed entering Yosemite Park ( as I was not about to challenge those mountain roads without a front brake. So too bad, but this just gives me an excuse to come back and ride Yosemite and Seqouia sometime in the near future. We took SR395 all the way to San Bernardino. Enroute we passed the a plant of Crystal Geyser Water (, which was literally in the middle of nowhere on SR395. We saw large groups of Elk Deer along the roadsides, which was very nice.

We arrived in San Diego at the motorcycle shop at 3pm. While I was having my bike serviced at the House of Motorcycles, Rusty took his bike in to the BMW motorcycle shop ( two blocks away and replaced his burned out headlight. Within the hour they had me in and out. The damage turned out to be a bent brake rotor, and regretfully they did not have one in stock. They were able to correct / straighten the rotor as much as possible so that the brake would work, but with a cavitating effect. They offered to order the part, but that could take another two days, which Rusty and I did not want to waste - plus I felt comfortable riding my bike as it was for the time being. Thanks to Bobby and Mike for their quick and invaluable assistance.

We arrived in San Ysidro ( at 4:15pm PST. We did our obligatory chores (gas station, Best Western hotel, Coco's restaurant, and the USPS) and deposited our mail forms at the local USPS. After a quick bite to eat at Coco's we departed San Ysidro 5:30pm and we were off to Las Vegas.

Interesting note:  we started the day off at 53 degrees in Bishop, CA, and in San Bernardino, CA, the temperature we experienced was 103 degrees. Talk about a drastic change !!!

We took I-15 all the way to Vegas. From 80 miles out we could already see the Vegas lights illuminating the clouds overhead. Believe it, or not, at 9pm PST with the sun already having gone down the temperature we experienced crossing the dessert on I-15 reached 105 degrees !!! Insanely hot !!!!

We arrived in Las Vegas ( at 10:30pm and checked into the Motel 6 right off the main strip. As this was my first time in Las Vegas we went for a quick walk down the strip where I saw all the big name hotels. It was nice to see, but way too rushed to really enjoy it. Oh well, yet another reason to have to come back here for a few days and enjoy, right?   :o)

We rode a grand total of 810 miles today. Allright !!!
