Day 4:

We started the day off (left Lincoln, NE) at 8:10am ( Weather was very favorable; overcast and cool. This was a nice change from the heat we have been experiencing. We rode west to Ogallala and then turned North towards Mount Rushmore. The roads we rode were very isolated with little to be seen as far as the eye could see with the exception of farm lands. We rode long stretches (+/- 70 miles) with no services available; so eventhough we have yet to use the spare tank we brought we are glad we brought it along.

We crossed into South Dakota and made our way through Hot Springs, SD (, which was very small and very much a tourist trap (gift shops, etc), but very nicely arranged (photogenic). Before making it to Mt. Rushmore we entered Black Hills National Forrest ( where we saw wild Buffallos roaming the park; regretfully we could only view them from a great distance.

Mt. Rushmore ( was nice to see although I have to say that I expected the monument to be bigger. I thought that it was going to be allot larger, but all in all well worthwhile the side trip. After we left passed through Keystone, SD (, which again was a touristy city, but also very nicely made up as it was nestled between the mountains.

We hopped on I-90 west and pulled over in Sturgis, SD (, for dinner. Next week there is going to be a week long motorcycling gathering here (several per year) and we saw hundreds of riders on the road heading in for an early start. They say that well over 500,000 bikers may gather here. We saw mostly Harley's on the road, followed by BMW's.

After we left Sturgis we opted to make it as far as Gillette, WY (, where we would end the day. Enroute I got pulled over by a statetrooper who cited me for going 10mph over the speed limit (85 in a 75 zone). While not happy about this I was pleasantly surprised that the penalty was only for $105.  Could have been worse I guess.  If this is the worst that happens to me on this adventure then that is fine with me   :o)

We rode a grand total of 732 miles on this day.
