Now as I mentioned in my earlier post, there were 3 foods my host said I had to try while I was in the Verona area - Bigoli, Cotoletta and Asino
Cotoletta is basically a really thin pork schnitzel which I had for lunch out at Lake Garda and of course as with any schnitzel it was delicious
Bigoli is a fresh pasta (not dry then cooked in water) and its basically a really think spaghetti but softer. Somewhere between a noodle and spaghetti I guess. I had it with duck as my first course at dinner on my second night. Delicious but filling.
Asino. This one was the real challenge. Asino is...donkey. Now apparently donkey meat is usually tough but they slow cook it in red wine, tomatoes, etc and it comes out tender. I ordered this as my second course at dinner and it was served with polenta. As I'm not a polenta fan I got roast potatoes too. My verdict on Asino, it wasn't bad but I wouldn't climb over beef or lamb to get to it. So for all those Winnie the Pooh fans out there I did eat Piglet and Eeyore in the same day and for this I am sorry.
So Cotoletta is awesome, the other two it's nice to say I tried them while I was here. Also another good tip my host gave me and one I followed on the second evening is to eat at Osteria's
After the aforementioned big meal I again went for a stroll round the very safe and lovely Verona after dinner (no gelato this time) and hit the pillow around midnight with a day trip to the nearby city of Mantova planned for the following day.
Politicians and nappies have one main thing in common. They should be changed regularly... And for the same reason.
