It’s been a couple of days since I wrote and we’ve had some fun though the weather isn’t the greatest. Sunday we went to Burns’ condo for drinks and dinner and as we sat on their sunny veranda out of the wind watched a steady parade of boats on the ICW since it was Sunday. After dinner (wonderful Mahi-Mahi) we watched the SuperBowl - a pretty good game by all accounts especially since the underdog New Orleans Saints won!
It was back into the 40s Sunday night but based on the forecast for the week - including some highs in the 50s - we decided Monday was to be our cruise of Fort Lauderdale, the Venice of America, aboard “Masquerade II”. We did our morning walk and then Burns joined us to catch the 11 am bridge lift right here at Atlantic Ave. They had never cruised this part of the ICW themselves - at least to the last and northernmost water taxi stop at Shooters
There are picket/patrol boats when you traverse the turning basin providing protection for cruise ships and vessels carrying hazardous cargo. And there was lots of traffic - recreational boats, sport fishing boats etc. And while we saw our fill of very large yachts we also saw a kayak - a two-person one mind you!
Back at the marina we took advantage of having experienced cruisers on board to get some fuel and a pump out before returning to Slip 45 and a complete wash down of the salt water
This morning we decided to go further a field on our walk and made it up to Hillsboro Inlet. Across the inlet was the 136 foot tall lighthouse - one of the most powerful beacons in the area and visible from 28 miles at sea. The current was running swiftly this morning and we watched a cruiser exiting and making heavy weather of it. We’d passed this on the way south but had been too busy paying attention to the channel to really look at the sights.
Richard decided today was a perfect day to wax the shroud around the fly bridge so between that and a grocery shopping trip to Publix, a wonderful fish market, and a Polish deli we’ve been busy. Hopefully I’ll get time to visit the hotel and read e-mail and update the blog before it rains!
