Where to begin? It was a nine to five day - but of a very different sort!

We cast off from Cortez Cove Marina - our second home for almost six months to the day - and started south at 9 a.m. It was a glorious day but we found the sun tricky in the fly bridge trying to read charts etc. We grounded again just outside of Cortez at Longboat Pass where there were several channels converging and I could not read the charts to save my life. I think it’s a good job we upgraded our Boats US membership to “unlimited” on the advice of Finnie - our neighbour at Cortez Cove, Stone Crab fisherman and a Boats US captain. We were rewarded shortly there after by the company of our first group of dolphins for the day.

Passed through Sarasota Bay and saw the Ringling Museum from a different vantage point. “True Colours” called us then and we discovered what a stupid place our VHF radio is mounted in the flybridge. We couldn’t get back to them and as we were approaching Sarasota and some tricky bridge navigation we had to let them go. We passed below and beside several bridges today - bascule, swing and fixed and got into the pattern of calling on channel 9 where necessary.

Got to Venice around lunchtime and decided to pick up fuel. Unfortunately the marina we chose had its pumps bagged with garbage bags so we chose another some 15 miles further along and called on the phone to be sure they could accommodate us. But before we got there we came across a Marine Max dealer, on the channel around Venice Airport, and stopped there. As we were re-fuelling I saw a Canadian boat pass with the Port Credit Yacht Club burgee. We caught up with them - “My Princess” - and chatted as we drove the canal that reminded me of the Murray Canal in Ontario. They were stopping at Palm Island Marina - very nice looking - but short of where we wanted to get tonight.

We left the GIWW - Gulf IntraCoastal Waterway - at the south end of Gasparilla Sound to head east toward Charlotte Harbour and Burnt Store Marina. I recognized the swing bridge at Gasparilla Island Causeway from trips to Gasparilla Island with my parents. It was nice to be out of the “ditch” and do some more open water cruising even though the depths were on average only 10 feet. The new chart plotter helped us hone right in on the marina which both of us had visited in the past.

I think we are the only visiting boat here tonight although they are expecting a group tomorrow apparently. They charge $1.75/foot plus electricity. But we’re tired after the stresses of the first day on the water and getting used to how “stuff’ works. This is a perfectly sheltered harbour with lots of big boats. We got in about 4:30 and went to register before 5 when they closed. Called Mum and Dad tonight as it was with them I first visited here.

Once again I didn’t take time from navigation to get a picture of the captain. We also saw lots of dolphins today including mother and baby right in front of us but alas I didn’t have the camera at the ready.

We sure lots of real estate today. I wonder when I'll get used to the apparent wealth here!

We enjoyed dinner on board tonight after a wonderful dinner on board “True Colours” last night.

Glad to hear that you are successfully enduring the ups and downs of Florida boating, tides, etc. It certainly is challenging. Your updates are soooo interesting. It really can only be admired and understood by the adventuresome boaters. We really look forward to the next entry. Pleasant journeys and safe seas.
