All good things must come to an end and so today we bade farewell to Auckland. All I could think of were my two new expressions - "sweet as" from Oz and "good on you" from the Kiwis. New Zealand switched off daylight savings time last night so we had an extra hour (fall back) to do some last minute walks about Auckland and finally pack our bags for the flight home. Funnily enough the Air New Zealand agent had trouble getting airport clearance for us initially so it's a good job we arrived early and had time to clear up the problem. We enjoyed exit row seats on a 777-200 ER - the only spot where there are only two seats together. In most spots there are three. We were late leaving as one passenger didn't show up and they had to find their luggage before we could leave. But we made up time with a good tail wind and arrived in San Francisco right on time after noon. We of course gained a day back by crossing the date line.
It was easy finding our way back to the Crowne Plaza and since we'd both slept a little on the flight we decided to explore San Francisco. We took our hotel shuttle back to the airport where we caught BART (the Bay Area Rapid Transit) to Powell Street where we then caught one of the cable cars. It was a lovely bright sunny day though there was a bitterly cold wind. Nonetheless we explored Union Square, the Saint Francis Hotel (where Richard stays when he comes to San Fran), Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Square. We had a fabulous Pacific Seafood Stew dinner overlooking Alcatraz and the Maritime Museum. Needless to say we crashed back at the hotel.
