Richard drove the west coast route today (SH 12) entirely by himself as I was suffering from a headache. It was a rainy day but we still managed to visit the Kauri Museum at Matakohe, where we seriously underestimated how much time we would spend. It was excellent and the first place I got a proper understanding of gumdigging and the relationship to Kauri trees. We also passed through Dargaville - home of the Kumara Festival - NZ's answer to the sweet potato, and the Waipoua Forest, home of Te Matua Ngahere, a 2,000 year old kauri tree. In Paihia we booked our trip to Cape Reinga and ate dinner at the ferry wharf in Opua so I could rest as soon as possible.

Hi Richard and Laura
Snowed today!! Thought you might like to know that ! So much fun to follow your journey . Great to hear David and Colleen are doing well and I knew you would like Rosemary and Murry . We had a glorious , long day too, to Cape Regina .I'm sure you are weary of travelling but know the experiences and memories will stay with you forever .
See you on your return
Susan
