Viewed our first thermal area today at Orakei Korako - geysers, bubbling mud, silica terraces emitting steam and hot water and all colours of algae. We'd found the geothermal electricity plants interesting as well as the hydro-electric ones along the Waikato River. Decided to get our introduction to Maori culture today so went to the Tamaki village for song, dance, ceremonies and hangi - a dinner prepared in a stone-lined earthen pit. It reminded us of our Polynesian adventure in 2000. There is an odour that's very prevalent here due to the geothermal activity in this area.
