As we end our road trip, we drive through a very wet Victoria. The smell is strong. Somewhere in between wet carpet and dead animal. The mosquitoes are in force, eating through freshly applied Aeroguard,  leaving only what can be described as minced meat of my feet. The 5 hour drive has so far taken 2 days. We went from Mildura to Hopetoun, and now Hopetoun to Castlemain. We met a young family from Belgium that was spending a couple of months driving around Victoria. Even with all the destruction and smell, they found it to be wonderful.
We stopped 1km short of a 25km road only to turn around and search for a new route. Before we drove, we had a look around and stretched our legs. In the midst of all this chaos, there was an eerie yet beautiful post apocalyptic feeling to it. Roads destroyed, fences torn away and sign posts drowned. Ducks now rule the roads, frogs drown out the noise of distant trucks and the spiders are feeding on the millions of insects that choke our breaths. It was easy to think we were the sole survivors of one of god's plans.
Castlemain had little damage but still the signs of flood was still visible. We checked out The Bridge Hotel, formally owned by my Grandparents and childhood home of my Dad. We stopped in the town for some lunch and we saw that the Bridge Hotel is for sale. Is this a sign? Castlemain is a very pretty place. Picturesque views, stone cottages and only 100km to Melbourne.
So we are now 100km from Melbourne. Josie, a friend from Torquay, had just moved to Williamstown and invited us to her house warming. Too good to pass up. Melbourne here we come.
