In Italy, but only just...

Eric We left Roma early on Monday morning, got straight onto Roma ring road and soon got lost! Eventually found the exit for Napoli. We chose not to use the autostrada thinking that the normal road would be more interesting and less traffic jam....wrong choice!
Back into the crazy traffic driving all day and covering only 350 kms. Eventually found our way past Napoli (which is a very large City) and settled into a camping site near Sorrento. As if it was not enough for the day, we then proceeded to visit Pompei, another 3 hours walking through the ruins of the ancient city. Today we decided to ride a few more kms. To make up for the time lost in Switzerland. We left Sorrento at 7 am and rode our bikes along the road carved into a rocky cliff with spectacular coastal views and leading to Almafi. It took us 2.5 hours to cover 25 km of winding narrow road staying between first and second gear as we could not go faster then 40 km/h.due to continuous curves and very heavy traffic.
As we progressively rode out of the rocky area we continued on to Paestrum then inland to Papaccio, Atena Lucana, Montemurro, Policoro and finished up at Metaponto about 120 ks from Brindisi. We have been 11 hrs on the road, covered 372 km. and it is now 10 pm. Total distance travelled so far: 2453 km. I am knackered! Tomorrow is good bye Italy and good day Greece 21 June- Got up early this morning, left Metaponto at 8.30 am, rode 122 km. to Brindisi via Taranto. Good road, hot day, blue sky. Here at the port to catch the 11 am ferry. Tried to get our carnets stamped at the customs but got the usual thumb down....not interested....too hard work...try Turkey..who cares! Greece here we come...

Travel warning (reply) Jun 25, 2006 22:35 EST by orby101
Glad to hear you had the good sense to get out of Italy whilst you still can. The socceroos play Italy in 8 hours and when we win (note the confidence in this sentence) it may not be safe for Australians to be in Italy for approx. 4 years. We whopped Greece but that was only a friendly match so it shouldn't matter as much, still don't take chances. Suggest you pretend not to know anything about fo... show all
