December 26, 2004 -- probably one of the longest days of my life not to mention the most irritating.

As most of you know, Phil & and I were to catch our flight to start our vacation in Peru at around 12:30pm from Ottawa to Atlanta then off to final destination of Lima. I made sure to call the airline before leaving home to double check timeslots. Everything seemed to be in order. Once at the airport we found out that wasnīt the case at all. The flight had been delayed and we didnīt actually make it on the plane until almost 2pm!!! Ou flight in atlanta was leaving at 430pm for Lima. It takes almost 3 hours to get to atlanta, so we knew we werenīt going to make it at all. We had been reassured by the Delta staff back in Ottawa that we would ībe taken care ofī but that we would not be arriving in Lima on the evening of the 26 as had been planned. So i had to call my mom and get her to notify my family in Peru.

Arriving in Atlanta and goign straight to the Delta Customer Service desk, things got harry, first, the lady behind the counter was one of the worst customer sevice reps iīve ever had to deal with, she informed us that we didnīt even have seats on the next dayīs flight!! yea, didnīt make much sense to us either. Once that was cleared up, Phil mentioned that since weīd have to spend the night in Atlanta that the rep in Ottawa had told us that they would give us hotel vouchers. Well this lady didnīt think that was hapening at all!! after enough arguing, Phil had the lady give us vouchers where we would get a certain percentage off our hotel room. Can you belive that? they wanted us to pay for our hotel after it was their own fault that we missed our flight. Phil must have argued for a good while before the rep realised we were an INTERNATIONAL flight. Hellooooooo? As Phil put it īdid she think we came from Ottawa, Illinois??ī So we finally got a free stay at a hotel and some food vouchers we left the counter. Phil was still pretty peeved so we went to another counter and explained our situation to another lady and this one was awesome, she ended up giving us each a 50$ voucher for use on any delta flight and each a cheque for 75$ woohoo!!! He wanted to get more but I nodged him and told him to not push it, what we had was good enough.

We settled into the hotel and planned what weīd do the next day, since we had most of the morning to burn we figured weīd visit Atlanta before our flight. We settled on going to the CNN headquarters & the Coca Cola museum (Jane you came to mind!!!).

Next morning we took a ride back to the airport where we connected to the metro (subway) system, which btw is very efficient! heheh we got off at hte stop and took our tour of CNN. That place was awesome! I took some photos but I am having problems uploading them so I hope to be successful while Iīm on my 2 week tour but for now iīm having problems (so sorry guys! pics will have to wait). ANyhoo the tour was very informative. I wonīt go into details since this is all about my trip to peru. Same goes for the coca cola museum, at the end of the tour we got to try a zillion different coca cola flavours and kinds from all over the world for free!!! Jane I wished you could have been there"!!

Once the tours were done we went back to the airport and got ready to board our plane.

Arrival in Peru is always quite the adventure. I always forget how shocking and overwhelming it can be. First of all most flights arrive at the same time so line ups to get through customs are disgusting, second, there is no air conditionining so itīs even less bearable. Third, your suitcase is always the last one to come out. At one point I seriously thought they had left our suitcases in Atlanta. And last but not least, leaving the airport and trying to find your family thorugh all the chaos, words cannot describe, you open the airport doors and you feel like a movie star, millions and millions of ppl held behind bars all screaming and whistling calling out to you īdo you need a taxi? need a hotel, etc. others yelling out their relatives names, I am always impressed I can find my family thorugh it all.

Arriving at my auntīs Phil begins to use his 4 months of intensive spanish classes and you can really tell how well heīs learned and how quickly. My aunt is extremely impressed since her english is very basic Phil has to use what he knows in spanish to communicate. My uncle on the other hand is half french so off the two have gone in great french convos. Soon after we all head to bed since we were embarking to their beach house for a week the next day.

Here is Philīs travelogue for those who would like to see his point of view:
