New York City, stop number one on our trip. Wow. I have to say, for a bunch of country bumpkins from little 'ol Lake Tahoe, we do pretty well in big cities. The most difficult part of the trip east was the temperature in the airplane. Cristine froze. Plain and simple, she froze. By the time we landed at JFK, she was dressed in two long sleeved shirts, one with a hood, and a down jacket. Mildly hypothermic is how I would describe it, she was shivering uncontrollably, babbling incoherently, and stumbling toward the plane's exit seeking New York's summer heat and humidity. The end product has been a high fever, the shivers and shakes, achy bones, and a lot of tears. No two ways about it, it sucks to be sick in New York City on your first day of an around the world trip. In spite of it all, Cristine has been a trooper. We've managed to see bits and pieces of Central Park, the New York skyline at night, the Staten Island Ferry, Statue of Liberty, Washington Square, Times Square, and more than a few hot dog vendors. Tomorrow we head out to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum, and the High Line. Oh yeah, and tomorrow is the fourth of July! It's a busy schedule in a busy town. We had a lovely afternoon conversation with a lovely woman from Australia on our hotel's rooftop patio. She gave us all kinds of advice for sights to see in Australia. It was an odd juxtaposition to be sitting on a rooftop garden in the middle of Manhattan while yearning for the "nothingness" of the Australian Outback. If we ever actually get to the Outback I'll probably yearn for all of Manhattan's hot dog carts. Cristine's sister Erika has been our unofficial tour guide here in Manhattan and we've had a blast. One more day of New York City speed touring and we head up north to Reykjavik, Iceland. We'll probably need to get Cristine some long underwear, gloves, and a bigger down parka.

I just learned where your blog is, and therefore where you 3 are. First, I really hope Cristine is doing better. Please call when you need a friend. I would love to hear from you! Second, Happy Birthday Bob! We've been talking about you today. The boys have had fun so far this summer. Lots of day camps and playing with the kids on our new street. We have Freels Peak set up as a vacation rental. Our former neighbors Valerie and Steve and their 2 kids are staying there through the end of July. We''ll be staying in their place in Hawaii. The boys start school again on August 15th. We love and miss you 3.

So sorry Cristine started off not feeling well- I bet it was because it was probably the first time she got to relax in a long time!
