I stayed at my Father's new home near Ajijic, Mexico. He has some FABULOUS neighbors and I know I've made some GREAT new friends! While in Mexico, we celebrated Julia's 6th Birthday with a traditional (mostly) Mexican Birthday Party! We had a pinata, played pin the tail on the donkey, ate a beautifully decorated cake, sang happy birthday in Spanish and opened gifts! Julia LOVED it and EVEN thanked me for a great Birthday party! WOW!
Ajijic hosts a Market on Wednesdays where I bought fresh fruit (raspberries & blackberries) SO CHEAP!!!! We also bought gifts for friends and family and various trinkets. On Saturday's & Sundays they have they market Plaza Ajijic with more of the same wares. Make sure to negotiate if you have it in you. Personally, I rarely negotiated because the prices seemed so fair.
One of the days we drove to Guadalajara to the Children's museum - it was VERY nice for the children, I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to do something interactive while visiting the area.
Another day we went to Tonala, Mexico. This is a great place to shop from a HUGE selection of gifts, housewares, art, etc. Tonala is known for great prices on the products!!!
In Chapala, I had no problems with the language. (Of course, I did try and I'm continuing to learn). It seems someone is always around who speaks english if you need help. However, I almost wish I wasn't bailed out as easily as I was. I believe I'd learn more if I had to struggle a little more!!!
On the second day in Chapala, as I walked home from the Lake with my new friend and my daughter, we had a dog follow us home! We (Julia) named him "Beethoven" - that changed I'm positive the moment we left Mexico. Anyway, he seems like a great dog but he HATES the gardner for some reason. We took him to the vet to get his shots, etc. and I wanted to set up an appointment to have him neutered - can you believe the cost is about $20!!! I wanted to neuter EVERY dog in Mexico at that price!!!!
The situation in regard to homeless dogs (and the care of animals in general) is TERRIBLE however, they have so many other issues to deal with down there that the pet population epidemic is only aided by grass roots organizations.
One evening we had dinner with live music and were able to dance, Julia had an amazing time dancing with me and her grandfather and then other people asked her to dance too! She was having a blast! I was so proud of how much spanish she was picking up and how she urged me to allow her to order her food in Spanish! Muey Bueno!!!!
Pictures to come - I promise!
