What is it with me and ships. There's the whole Britannia thing that I recounted a few days ago but in Dundee I finally caught up with another one that I've been chasing for over a quarter of a century. RRS Discovery was the ship that took Scott and Shackleton on their successful first expedition to Antarctica. She then had various adventures some good, some bad and when HVM was touring Scotland she would have been in the Antarctic for a second time.

Saved from the breakers yard in 1979 she eventually left London for her home port of Dundee in 1986. I was studying in London then and on that very day (Friday 28th March 1986 - not that I remember every detail or anything) I was racing through Central London to get to Tower Bridge in time to she her leave. But I was late and all I saw was her stern disappearing round a bend in the river. I tried to follow on a London bus but ended up marooned somewhere in Dagenham several hours later.

But now I've finally seen her so all is well.

And rest.
