Arriving in cities at night is one of my least favourite things. This time, we asked the taxi driver to take us to a certain street, and he decided to drop us at one of his commission hotels. So not only did we have to scout out for a room, we also had to figure out where we were. After several attempts at very gross rooms at high prices we were getting tired. Almost 10 pm and we were very hungry too. Oh, and it started to rain...

The only thing that made this all bearable is that we've met up with some other travellers we met in Bako.  A lovely Finnish couple is on a similar path as ours for the next few days. It makes things much nicer to have someone to chat with over dinner and hunt for hotels together. Brian gets quickly frustrated with me, but not with other people, so as an added bonus, he stays pleasant!

Dodging the hotels with the most prostitutes out front we came to the realization that everywhere was a dive, so just go for a cheap one – it's only one night, we'll catch a boat in the morning. A brief glance at room and we agreed it would be fine. After getting into the room, we started to notice some subtler details. Like the fact that the walls had been recently painted on the bottom half, mouse poo on the bathroom floor and the cockroach that ran under the bed. But
better still were the lipstick kisses on the wall, scribbed phone numbers, and numerous penis drawings doing various penis-things. Gross!!!

Funny thing is how different everything is during the daylight. Instead of prostitutes, the same street is filled with flower shops! Dirty kopi kedais are replaced with modern coffee shops. Previously closed shops sprout flashlights for Brian to oggle over. As fun as all this is, there's no way we're spending another night, so off to the boat jetty to go to the interior further to Kapit.
