When we left Koh Lanta we really didn't know where we were going to go. I had a big park that I wanted to visit on the peninsula, and we knew we would have to fly out of Kuala Lumpur, but other than that?
It seemed that there was a reasonable minibus ticket to the Georgetown, on the island of Penang
and actually enjoyed ourselves.
Georgetown centre is a cute crumbling old British colony. I loved wandering the back streets taking pictures of decaying buildings with flaking paint. We only had to shoo off Brian's paparazzi once. I don't know what it is, but that man is asked to have his photo taken by strangers more than I take his picture!
On the main streets, Brian was in a shopping paradise. It's been awhile since shops have sold any more than the bare necessities, so he was gawping into camera stores, watch stores, stores selling scuba equipment, army surplus, toys, sunglasses, and low and behold e-cigarettes! I was content just to oggle over the beautiful batik fabrics.
For our taste buds, it was a true first taste of Malaysia. Chinese street food stalls, roasted chestnuts, pickled fruits...Little India had our senses full. It amazes me how you can walk in just one street and have your ears full of bollywood music, eyes filled with glittering saris, nose full of incense - and not just hearing, seeing and smelling - it's like someone is forcefully ramming it into your orphaces! So we went with it and crammed our mouths full of naan and dahl :)
So far it looks like we're going to enjoy our time in Malaysia!
