Brian was out like a light and slep 12 hours after not sleeping on the plane the previous night. I had a hard time falling asleep until about 5am and then slept for 5 hours straight.
Needless to say we had a late start to our day, so we took the boat up to the old town and had some amazing street food. This was a street kitchen recommended to us. A 5* chef moved from 5* hotels to the street. Needless to say it was fabulous! We decided to start our stomachs off to a good start and I ordered crispy pork with chillis and hot basil. Brian ordered pork with lemon and garlic and there must have been a whole head of garlic sliced up on his dish!
Took a walk around the streets and focused on avoiding tuk-tuk drivers and looked at the sites from the outside – we'll save the buddahs for another day
The streets seem very calm and not too busy to me. The busiest I saw was when a nearby school let out and all the children piled out to get their after school snacks at the street vendors. So many interesting treats! Several months will not be nearly long enough to try everything...I settled for some fresh melon to quench the thirst. Next time it will be coated in chillies :)
More street food for evening dinner. This time it was crispy fried duck and squid in black pepper sauce with spring rolls. I think I have gone to heaven!
Preparing for our journey in the morning and I don't know if there will be any food stops along the way. So we went to one of the many 7 elevens and picked up a few snacks. We will sample some honey roasted sunflower seeds, spicy tamarind in plumb powder (what's tamarind?), jackfruit chips, and seaweed sticks (I opted for original flavour rather than pizza).
We weren't the only ones enjoying the plethora of food. Brian marvelled at the number of rats and cockroaches that congregated on the streets after dark.
